Workshop for New Department Heads. UNC-Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, June 16 & 17, 2003.

Other Service Activities

April 2003 I am in the process of contacting UNCG Library about a project that relates to the Department's efforts to become a Center for Contemporary Poetry. Colombian poet and Professor Emeritus Dr. Ramiro Lagos has agreed to donate his extensive poetry collection to the Jackson Library. I would like for Dr. Lagos' donation to serve as the foundation for a Special Collection on Hispanic Contemporary Poetry. I am also requesting donations from the poets that attended our recent International Poetry Symposium. It is my hope that UNCG may have a very unusual collection on the production of contemporary Hispanic poets.

March 28, 2003 Second Annual Student Poetry Contest

March 27-29, 2003 I directed the Department of Romance Languages' First International Poetry Symposium. Sixty five speakers and poets, who came to UNCG to share their expertise or their poetry, attended the conference. I have received many letters from the participants complementing the organization, the intellectual quality and the warm reception they received at UNCG. The events were opened to UNCG students and were well publicize among the larger community.

April 8, 2002 I organized a poetry reading, as part of my on-going efforts to bring contemporary poets to UNCG. It included a talk about their work and a poetry reading by Spanish poets Dr. Ana Merino (Appalachian State University) and Dr. Fernando Operé (University of Virginia).

April 8, 2002 First Annual Student Poetry Contest

November 22, 1999 I organized a poetry reading by the distinguished Colombian poet Dora Castellanos, Student participation was excellent, several graduate students spoke very positively of the experience.

April 15,1992 I hosted a Poetry Reading by Mexican Poets Iliana Godoy y Norma Wanless, "A Poetry Reading and Discussion."
