The
parentage of William Danford is very much in doubt. One website (that
of Harold Danford) lists William's parents as Rev. Samuel Danforth
(1625-1674) and Mary Wilson (1633-1713). This would, of course, link
to the early pilgrim Nicholas Danforth, who arrived in the Massachusetts
Bay Colony in 1634 through Nicholas' son, Rev. Samuel Danforth (who
was a member of the first class to graduate from Harvard College).
Others think this is pretty doubtful. The definitive
history (Danforth Genealogy, John May, 1902) lists no William
Danford as the descendant of Rev. Samuel Danforth. Indeed Rev. Samuel
Danforth married Mary WIlson, reliably reported by May, in November
1651. So the birth of William Danford in about 1650 may simply be
a coincidence of dates that does not prove lineage.
That William Danforth lived in Ipswich, MA in June
1660, and Byfield parish of Newbury before 1675 is claimed on the
web by Carolyn G. Depp with some apparent authority. He was last
mentioned in Newbury records in connection with a deed dated March
27, 1721. Some websites list William Danforth as having been born
in Wales.
Well established is the lineage through William's
son, Samuel Sr (1683? - 1745) living in New Jersey. Samuel Sr.'s
son Samuel Jr. was the father of Peter Danford.

The following
is from the Belmont County History, 1988 by Ohio Extension
Homemakers via Diana Davis: "Peter Danford, born in Chesterfield
Township,
Burlington County, NJ in 1739 served in the Revolution War. He came
from NJ to Ten Mile, PA in 1795 or 1796, then in 1798, he came to
Captina Creek Valley in Belmont County, where his three sons had preceded
him and built a cabin on the land they had secured from the government.
He lived in this beautiful valley, raised his family, and died on
August 22, 1827, where he was buried in a privategraveyard belonging
to Jacob Moore, the father-in-law of his son William. He married Sarah
Morrison, born February 20, 1746, in 1764; however, she diedin 1781.
Then he married Mercy Ewing in 1783, and after her death, Margaret

From History
of Belmont and Jefferson Counties, Ohio (J. A. Caldwell, 1880):
"At an early day, some time between 1785 and 1796 Peter Danford
moved with his family to Washington county, Pennsylvania, where
he settled on Patterson creek From this point his sons, Samuel,
William and Ambrose, came to Belmont county, Ohio, about 1797, and
located in section 4, Washington township, where they cleared a
piece of ground, built a cabin, and planted some corn, after which
Samuel and William returned to Patterson creek for the family, leaving
Ambrose to take care of the crop and look after the interest of
the new hom in the woods. After an absence of several weeks, the
boys returned to their frontier home bringing with them their father
and sister Sarah, the younger sister Rebecca having been left at
Patterson creeek. She was brought over perhaps the following year......William,
the second son of Peter Danford, was born in New Jersey, perhaps
about the year 1778. He married Elizabeth Moore, daughter of Michael
Moore in 1799. In 1807 he entered the east half of section 22, now
Washignton township, at present owned by John Sidebottom. The War
of 1812 having broken out, he joined a company raised in Belmont
County, and marched to Lower Sandusky, where he died in November
1813."
William served
two tours of duty, dying during the second. A letter from a granddaughter
of one Joseph Martin relates the following: "My ancestor had
an affair with a Mrs. Danford an they had, I believe, 3 or 4 children.
One of them was named Harvey. Their father was Joseph Martin who
at the time had been married to Christian Plank. Hoseph was born
in Hampshire Co, VA and moved with his parents and siblings to Belmont
Co., OH in the early 1800;s. I understand that when Mr. Danford
came back from fighting indians in the West he found her with the
children and supposedly kicked her out, but then he went back out
West and was killed while battling Indians." |
