Course Description: Movement concepts and vocabulary of safety release technique with influence from the somatic sciences applied to the creation of a dance work that encourages the development of performance skills.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to:
1. Apply effective technical skills in a variety of movement material;
2. Understand the importance of the individual within the whole process, and one’s contributions to the final product;
3. Demonstrate an improved ability in using the body as an instrument of artistic expression;
4. Develop a personal movement style within the artist’s work;
5. Demonstrate the ability to learn and retain more complex movement sequences;
6. Demonstrate movement with sensitivity to performance and virtuosity;
7. Analyze and discuss personal artistic and technical growth through instructor feedback and self assessment;
8. Understand the importance of self-discipline and self-motivation in the continual effort to improve individual performance and enhanced satisfaction in dance as a performing art form;
9. Have a deeper understanding of cooperative relationships in a working environment;
10. Have a broader sense of possible approaches to the choreographic process.

Attendance, Absences, and participation
Attendance in each class is mandatory for the progression of the choreographer’s work. You are allowed 2 absences (excused or unexcused) from class. Please let me know ahead of time if you are aware of a necessary absence. Excessive absences will result in the lowering of your grade, and in your dismissal from performances. Emergency situations including injuries will be dealt with on an individual basis.
2. Technical and Artistic Ability: 25% of your grade will be based on Technical and Artistic Ability. Technical ability relates to your placement, alignment, use of strength, use of your own range in flexibility, use of the torso, and use of torso in relation to upper body and lower body. Artistic ability relates to your overall musicality and sense of rhythm, projection, performance and presence, and the use of movement/dynamics.
3. Effort and Improvement: 25% of your grade will be based on Effort and Improvement. Effort and Improvement relates to your ability to pick up combinations, application and retention of corrections, and your personal work habits in class.
