Climatology Exercise

1) For GSO

a) Using the blank climograph found on page 210 in your lab manual, plot a climograph using the information from the "Normals, Means, and Extremes" document handed out in class.  On the climograph make certain to include a bar graph showing montly precipitation, a monthly temperature curve, elevation, lattitude and longitude, annual precipitation, the annual temperature range, and mean annual temperature.

b) Mention which Koppen climate type GSO is classed as.  Carefully explain which data show that GSO is indeed a member of that class.  (For example, if GSO was a member of the humid subtropical (C) group, it's montly temperatue data would show that the average temperature of the coldest month falls below 64 F, but is greater than 27 F -- in other words it has a mild winter.  However, it is not enough to say that it has a mild winter, you need to point out the climate data that shows that it has a mild winter.)

c) Discuss the physical controls that determine GSO's climate.

2) Select one climograph from the list distributed in class.

a) Locate the area on a map, and to as great an extent as possible, describe the landscape and environment of the place.  Mention it's latitude, longitude, and elevation.  Describe its patterns of vegetation and how they may be affected by the climate of the place.

b) Do as in item "b" above, but for your selected location rather than "GSO".

c) Do as in item "c" above, but for your selected location.

Resources: the internet (e.g., www.worldclimate.com), atlases, your text and lab manual, climate atlases, maps, and other data sources.

d) Make and overhead of your climograph and be prepared to present your data and information to the class on _______.
