GREEK HISTORICAL WRITERS

OFFICE HOURS:  WF 11-11:30 and by appointment.

TEXTS:  J. S. Rusten, Thucydides.  The Peloponnesian War, Book II

Liddell & Scott’s Greek-English Lexicon (“Little Liddell”)

COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of this course you should be able to:

    1. read a selected passage from Thucydides without the aid of a lexicon
    2. discuss the importance of Thucydides in Greek historiography
    3. describe the conventions of Greek historiography
    4. describe the major events of the Peloponnesian War

GRADES:   Grades will be determined as follows:
 

Midterm Exams (2)      40%
Research Paper       30%
Final Exam      30%

MIDTERM EXAMS:  We will have two midterm exams (February 24 & April 14).

PAPER:  Each member of the class will write a 7-10 page paper on some aspect of Thucydides.  Each of you will lead a discussion on your paper topic for one class period during the last three weeks of the semester.  We will start discussing the papers during the 2nd class period.  More information will be provided at that time

ATTENDANCE:  Because of the unusual circumstances under which this course is being offered, I will have close to zero tolerance for missing class or being unprepared for class.  If you miss class or are not prepared for class, I will give you via e-mail a warning the first time it happens.  If it happens a second time, you will be dropped from the class.

FINAL EXAM:  The final exam will be on Wednesday, May 14 from noon to 3 p.m.
