Although the meter becomes less definite further into Matthew Arnold's "Self-Dependence," the first stanza is in definite trochaic pentameters, the second and fourth lines being shortened one syllable by catalexis:

                                /  *  | *   * | /     *  |   /    * | /   *
Weary of myself, and sick of asking

                               /     * | /     *  |  /     * |  /    *   | /    (*)
What I am, and what I ought to be,

                              /    * |  /   *   |    /    * |  /        *    |    /      *
At this vessel's prow I stand, which bears me

                              /      *    |    /     *   |  /     *  |  /   * | /    (*)
Forwards, forwards, o'er the starlit sea.
