EXTERNAL GRANTS
Funded
Aug 2003 Predicting individual risk of cognitive decline in women (1 R03 AG22621-01). Funded by the National Institute on Aging Small Grant Program for $74,750 (Total Costs) (Primary Investigator). The purpose of this study is to examine the interactive effects of physical activity and aerobic fitness with ApoE-4 genotype to impact the cognitive performance of post-menopausal women.
Aug 2003 Testosterone's
effects on the progression of atherosclerosis in aging men (TEAAM). Funded by the Kronos Longivity Research
Institute for $390,000 per year for 5 years (Co-Investigator). The purpose of this study is to examine the
influence of supplemental testosterone use on cardiovascular disease risk
factors in older men. This is a longitudinal study and cognition and aerobic
fitness will be measured at baseline, 18 mo, and 36
mo. My role is to coordinate the
cognitive testing and to contribute to papers related to the cognitive
performance data.
July 2003 Does exercise exacerbate seizures in epileptics. Funded by the Mayo Clinic
Scottsdale Research Grants Program for $35,000 each year for two years
(Collaborator). The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a
bout of acute exercise on cognitive performance, mood, and seizure status in
epileptic patients. My role was to
design the bout of acute exercise and I will assist with all papers related to
the cognitive performance data.
Dec 2000 Breast
cancer survivors: Off-treatment fatigue, quality of life, and body image for active
versus inactive survivors. Funded for $960 by the Women's Sport Foundation Grant
(Co-Investigator). This study was designed to examine the relationship
between body image, quality of life, and physical activity level in breast
cancer survivors.
Nov 1999 Cross-cultural
study of goal orientation and attribution in Anglo-American and Japanese athletes. Funded for $800 by the
Contract Support Office of Kyushu Institute of Technology (Collaborating
Investigator). The purpose of
this study was to examine the differences in goal orientation and attributional styles between Japanese and American physical
education students.
Pending
2004 Neuroanatomical
substrates of aging and cognitive decline. R01 submitted to the National Institutes of
Health for $1.9 million (Co-Investigator).
The purpose of this study is to identify the baseline levels and one
year declines of gray and white matter structures associated with
cross-sectional, age-related differences in cognitive function; to identify the
baseline levels and one year declines of gray and white matter structures
associated with longitudinal cognitive declines in aging; to determine how the
regional distribution and severity of brain changes associated with cognitive
aging are influenced by variation in blood pressure, aerobic fitness level, and
APOE genotype; and to determine how these variables predict subsequent
cognitive decline.
2004 Testosterone's
effects on the progression of atherosclerosis in aging men (TEAAM). R01 submitted to the National Institutes of
Health for $6.3 million over 5 years (Co-Investigator).
Funded (as PI)
March 2002 Cognitive
performance in postmenopausal women.

Oct 1998 Acquisition
and retention of motor skills as a function of age and aerobic fitness. Funded for $7,000 by the
