COURSE SYLLABUS

ESS 258-01: Lifeguard Training

Credits:              3

Prerequisites:
                           (BOTH prerequisites (A & B) must be met in order for a student to be eligible to continue in the course)

                          A. Swimming   (Students must pass ALL of the following tests to be eligible to continue in the class)

                                          1.  Swim 500 yds. (20 lengths) continuously as follows:

                                          2   200 yds. (8 lengths) FC using rhythmic breathing and propellant kick (e.g. flutter)

                                          3.  100 yds. (4 lengths) BR

                                          4.  200 yds. (8 lengths) either FC or BR…this may be a mixture of the two strokes

                                          N.B. The swimming prerequisites are not timed.

                                         5.  Swim 20 yds. using FC or BR, surface dive to 7-10ft., retrieve 10 pound brick, return to surface,

                                              swim 20 yds. back to start point w/brick in both hands (swim on back with EB kick suggested)
                                             & face above the water.
                                             (Rationale: competency in diving to a depth for retrieval and swimming w/additional weight w/out
                                              hands = strong leg use).
 

                          B. CPR/First Aid

                                           Hold CURRENT Adult, Child, Infant CPR & Community First Aid
                                           Certification.  Current cards must be shown to the instructor by the second class meeting

                                         YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DROP FROM THE COURSE IF YOUR CPR AND
                                          FIRST AID CERTIFICATIONS ARE NOT CURRENT AND YOU DO NOT
                                          SHOW THEM TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR BY THE SECOND CLASS MEETING.

Catalog Description:          Skills, knowledge, and techniques for lifeguarding with possibility of certification in CPR for

                                         the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Pool Lifeguarding.
 
Student Learning Outcomes:        At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

                                           # i)  define the responsibilities of a lifeguard.
                                          # ii)  define and discuss legal issues relating to the responsibilities of a lifeguard.
                                         # iii)  define appropriate behavior, conduct, and maturity required for lifeguard certification.
                                         # iv)  recognize common aquatic hazards and explain how to eliminate or minimize such hazards.
                                         # v)  explain how to keep patrons of aquatic facilities safe in and around the water;
                                        # vi)  define and demonstrate appropriate surveillance techniques; define and identify distressed
                                                  and drowning victims; recognize and respond effectively to emergencies.

                                       # vii)  describe and demonstrate rescue skills essential for lifeguards.
                                      # viii)  describe and demonstrate correct emergency care procedures for patrons
                                                (*PDT/First Aid/CPR/AED)
                                        # ix)  meet the objectives of the American Red Cross certification for Lifeguard Training.
 

Teaching Strategies:          This course consists of lectures, class discussion, videos, visual aids, Blackboard handouts,

                                         practical demonstrations, practice, drills, evaluation, and feedback.
                                         Active study and discussion enhances the learning environment.  Students are encouraged and expected
                                         to come to class prepared to ask questions and to actively participate in class discussions.
 

Evaluation:                A.    For course grade  (standards and objectives established by the American Red Cross (ARC)

                                                                       will be adhered to for all ARC requirements)
 
                                      a) Class work                                 25%

                                        (Attendance requirement = 9/15 days; additional, optional lab days have been scheduled- these

                                          days are not for credit)
 
                                    c)  Final ARC Written Examination* 10%                                 (SLO # iv - ix)
                                                                        (in class, , ‘03)

                                      *(standardized ARC 60 question, m/choice exam.-  a score of 80% in EACH of
                                         the four sections must be made (i.e.12 correct answers out of 15) to pass).
                                        The four sections include Emergency Care, Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid.

                                        If a student is absent from the final written exam, an "F" will be assigned for the course.

                                        If a student does not make 80% on EACH of the four sections, certification will not be awarded.
                                        The student will also be assigned 0% for this aspect of the course grade.


                                     d)  Skills Final                                 55%

                                           (As per ARC standards, water rescue skills will be evaluated and graded for meeting the objective

                                            of the rescue procedures, not for perfect skill performance)       (20%)              (SLO # vi, vii, ix)
 
                                            It is the responsibility of the student to be in class on the day of the water skills tests.  If a
                                            student is absent on the day of the water skills tests, an "F" will be assigned for the course grade.

                                          (CPR skills will be evaluated and graded during the CPR for the Professional
                                           Rescuer unit)                                                                             (10%)              (SLO # viii, ix)

                                          (First Aid skills will be evaluated and graded during the First Aid unit)   (10%)     (SLO # viii, ix)

                                          (AED skills will be evaluated and graded during the AED unit)     (10%)              (SLO # viii, ix)

                                           (AED written test to be graded at the end of the AED unit)         (5%)                (SLO # vii, ix)

                                          (standardized ARC 10 question, m/choice exam - a score of  80% (i.e. 8 correct answers out of 10)
                                           to pass.

                                            If a student is absent from any of the unit practical or written exams, an "F" will be assigned for the
                                            course grade.
                                            If a student does not make 80% on the written test, certification in AED will not be awarded.
                                            The student will be assigned 0% for this aspect of the course grade

                                          *PDT is an attendance course and does not require a practical or written test.
 

                                   B.  For ARC Lifeguard Certification

                                         Meet ALL of the following requirements

                                         a)  Pass CPR/FA/AED practical tests.                                    (SLO # viii, ix)

                                         b) Score minimum 80% on ALL ARC written tests.                (SLO # iv - ix)

                                         c) Pass water rescue skills practical tests.                               (SLO # vi, vii, ix)

                                         Certification will not be awarded unless all of the above requirements are met.
 

                                          Victims and on-deck evaluators for the water test will be recruited from outside the class
                                          if possible.  Be prepared to stay longer than the regular class scheduled time for the water
                                         skills tests.

                                         Becoming a lifeguard means a commitment to certain principles of conduct and responsibility.
                                         Lifeguards need to be mature, reliable, healthy, fit and ready to act.  In this class,
                                         students are expected to meet or exceed these standards.  ANY behavior that hinders the
                                         learning process and/or threatens the safety of others will result in administrative WITHDRAWAL
                                         from the course.
 

Grading:                          Your final course grade will be determined using the scale below:

                                       90 - 100 = A
                                         80 - 89 = B
                                         73 - 79 = C
                                         65 - 72 = D
                                              <65 = F


                      THERE ARE NO EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS

                      AS THE NEW SEMESTER BEGINS, THIS IS THE TIME THAT STUDENTS SHOULD BE
                     THINKING ABOUT THE GRADE THEY WOULD LIKE TO EARN IN THIS COURSE.
                     THE  INSTRUCTOR WILL NOT  NEGOTIATE WITH A STUDENT AT THE END OF THE
                     SEMESTER REGARDING PERFORMANCE IN THE COURSE.

                     ESS MAJORS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY MUST EARN NO LESS THAN A "C" IN THIS
                     COURSE TO FULFILL DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS.

                     NON-MAJORS MUST EARN NO LESS THAN A "D" IN THIS COURSE TO FULFILL
                     UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS.

                     Grades for this course are not posted, given over the phone or by e-mail.  A student may set up an appointment
                     the instructor at any time to discuss her/his progress in the course.  Final grades are available online through
                     UNCG Genie.

Attendance Policy:
                                                  If a student misses the first class meeting without discussing the reason with the instructor, the
                                                  student will be administratively dropped from the course. Students are expected to attend every
                                                  class meeting and actively participate in class (see Undergraduate Handbook).
                                                  Students will be marked absent if they come to class but do not participate, unless they have the
                                                  instructor's approval not to participate.  The student is expected to stay in class for that session.

Record of attendance is taken in this class.
Sleeping in class, not paying attention or being disruptive in class, or being late TWICE to class will constitute ONE absence.  You will be asked to leave the class if you fall asleep.
If a student needs to leave class early, the instructor must be informed at the beginning of class.

                            Absence Policy:

                                             ABSENCES WILL AFFECT  FINAL GRADES AS FOLLOWS:

                                               1 absence = -5%
                                               2              = -10%
                                               3              = -15%
                                               4              = -20%
                                               5              = FAIL THE COURSE
STUDENTS are responsible for keeping up to date with absence & lates record.
 
IF A STUDENT ACCUMULATES FIVE ABSENCES BEFORE THE WITHDRAW
DEADLINE, THE STUDENT IS ENCOURAGED TO WITHDRAW FROM THE COURSE.
IF A STUDENT STOPS ATTENDING CLASS BUT DOES NOT OFFICIALLY WITHDRAW FROM
THE COURSE, A GRADE OF "W" WILL BE ASSIGNED.  THIS GRADE WILL BE COMPUTED
INTO THE  GPA.

IF A STUDENT ACCUMULATES FIVE ABSENCES AFTER THE WITHDRAW, A GRADE OF

"WF" WILL BE ASSIGNED.  THIS GRADE WILL BE COMPUTED INTO THE  GPA.
 
An absence may be excused if covered by official documentation, i.e. a physician's note, professor's letter,
telephone or e-mail message PRIOR  to class.  A message from another student will not constitute an
excused absence.  A student should see the instructor if there are any questions concerning possible excused
absences..

Student athletes must bring a game schedule to the instructor as soon as possible after the first class meeting;
they must verbally inform the instructor of pending absence at least one class period in advance of the absence.

UNCG rarely closes for inclement weather.  Radio and TV stations have closing notifications by 6:30a.m.
A student may also call 334.5000 for a message related to weather closings.  The messages are updated hourly.


                    Late Attendance Policy:

Students are expected to arrive for class on time.  If a student arrives after attendance has been taken, a late
will be assigned for the class.  It is the responsibility of the student to tell the instructor of their attendance.
If the instructor is not informed, an absence will be assigned.  If a student is going to be late for class regularly,
the reason must be discussed with the instructor.


                    Late Assignment Policy:

                              All assignments must be handed in by 4:00 p.m. on the due date. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

                              AND A GRADE OF '0' WILL BE ASSIGNED FOR THE  ASSIGNMENT.
 
                   Study Expectations:
Students are expected to spend 2 - 3 hours studying outside of class for every 1 credit hour assigned
to the course (see Undergraduate Handbook).

                   Presentation & Content of Work:
Effective written communication through assignments, quizzes, and exams is expected in this  course.   This includes
attention to the depth and relevance of content in relation to the requirements  of the assignments, to writing style,
and to detail of grammar, spelling, etc.
A student may have a complete draft of any assignment reviewed by the instructor BEFORE it is turned in for
a final grade; the review is not graded and may be written in pen.
All assignments turned in for a grade must be typed, and must be in a folder.
All work turned in must have the following information on a cover sheet:
                                          Student name & I.D., date of assignment, course title, instructor name, & assignment title
 
                             Points will be deducted from worked turned in for a grade as follows:
 
                                          i)  no cover sheet  folder                                            = 1pt. each
 
                                         ii)  not typed no signed UNCG Academic Integrity statement, typos, grammatical errors,
                                             poor sentence construction, no paragraphs           = 3 pts .each/assignment
 
                             If students need free assistance with planning, writing, or revising papers, they should contact
                             the University Writing Center or call 334.3125.  A trained writing consultant will offer advice and feedback
                             regarding in-progress assignments.
                            The consultant WILL NOT write an assignment for a student.
 
           General Information:
                            i)   HATS, FOOD, CHEWING GUM, TOBACCO PRODUCTS, AND DRINKS ARE NOT PERMITTED
                                 IN THE POOL AREA.  ALL CELL PHONES, PAGERS, ETC. MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING CLASS.
 
                            ii)  Students must meet the instructor at the bleachers; students must be dressed out at the start of each in-pool class.
                                 STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO GET INTO THE WATER UNLESS ASKED TO DO SO BY
                                 THE INSTRUCTOR.

                           iii)  STUDENTS ARE REMINDED THAT WEARING JEWELRY DURING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY MAY

                                CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR INJURY TO OTHERS.  FOR SAFETY REASONS, STUDENTS ARE
                                ASKED TO REMOVE ALL JEWELRY BEFORE THE START OF CLASS.  STUDENTS ARE
                                RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAKE KEEPING OF THEIR JEWELRY.
