ESS 263: Basic SCUBA
Credits: 2
Prerequisites: ALL
STUDENTS MUST FILL OUT A MEDICAL FORM TO BE ABLE TO
PARTICIPATE IN THIS COURSE. THE MEDICAL FORM WILL BE REVIEWED
BY THE BLUE DOLPHIN DIVE SHOP.
ALL OPEN WATER CERTIFICATION CANDIDATES MUST PASS A SWIM
TEST DURING THE FIRST SCHEDULED LAB MEETING.
To become a scuba diver, a student needs to
be comfortable in the water and have basic
swimming skills. The swim test will include:
10 minute float/treading water/dead man's float
200 yd. swim or 300yd. swim with mask and fins
A STUDENT MUST PASS THE SWIM TESTS TO CONTINUE IN THE COURSE.

Catalog Description:
Development of fundamental skills, knowledge, and techniques of skin and
SCUBA diving. Opportunity provided for open water training and final
certification.
Student Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
# i) describe the principles and basic information necessary
for divers to dive
safely.
# ii) define and demonstrate basic diving procedures and skills
in confined water,
i.e. swimming pool.
# iii) define and demonstrate diving skills in a supervised
open water environment.
# iv) perform basic SCUBA skills and techniques to a level
of proficiency to
receive certification as a PADI Open Water Diver. This certification
enables
the student to dive independently within the limits of his/her training
and
experience.
#v) plan, conduct and log open water no stop (no decompression)
dives when
properly equipped and accompanied by a buddy, in conditions with which
they have training and experience.
Evaluation: Water Skills Pass/Fail
Confined water sessions 100pts.
383 - 390 = A
374 - 382 = B
365 - 373 = C
<364 = F
THERE ARE NO EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS. AS THE NEW SEMESTER
BEGINS, THIS IS THE TIME THAT STUDENTS SHOULD BE THINKING
ABOUT THE GRADE THEY WOULD LIKE TO EARN IN THIS COURSE. THE
INSTRUCTOR WILL NOT NEGOTIATE WITH A STUDENT AT THE
END OF
THE SEMESTER REGARDING PERFORMANCE IN THE COURSE.
ESS MAJORS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY MUST EARN NO LESS THAN A
"C" IN THIS COURSE TO FULFILL DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS.
NON-MAJORS MUST EARN NO LESS THAN A "D" IN THIS COURSE TO
FULFILL UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS.
Grades for this course are not posted, given over the phone or by e-mail.
A student may set
up an appointment the instructor at any time to discuss her/his progress
in the course. Final
grades are available online through UNCG Genie.
Required Text:
All students are required to have the PADI Open Water Crew Kit. This
kit
includes the text, dive logs, dive tables, and student record folder.
The kit
is included in the cost of the course and will be distributed to
students during
the first day of class.
Required Equipment: Students need to come to the second lab class with the following:
a set of fins, booties, a mask, and snorkel
The Blue Dolphin Dive Shop has put together a package of these items at
a
special price for UNCG students.

Topical Outline: Introduction
UNCG students conduct themselves in accordance with the highest standards

If a student misses the first class meeting without notifying the
instructor, the instructor will administratively drop the student from
the course. Students are expected to attend every class meeting and
actively participate in class (see Undergraduate
Handbook). Students
will be marked absent if they come to class but do not participate,
unless they have the instructor's approval not to participate. The
student
is expected to stay in class for that session.
Record of attendance is taken in this class.
Sleeping in class, not paying attention or being disruptive in class, or being
late TWICE to class will constitute ONE absence.
If a student needs to leave class early, the instructor must be informed at
