Information and Submission Guidelines

Founded in 1974, Studies in American Humor (ISSN 0095-280X) publishes essays, review essays, and book reviews on all aspects of American humor. Submissions of  essay manuscripts of between 5000 and 8000 words are welcome. The journal also invites individuals to send books for review; books and essays for our feature, “The Year’s Work in American Humor Studies”; and primary texts with short analytical essays for “The Recovery Room.”

Two letter-quality copies of the manuscript in MLA style should be submitted with a stamped, self-addressed envelope (international contributors excepted). Chicago style will be accepted only for the initial readers’ reviews of manuscripts; all submissions must be converted to MLA if accepted for publication.  With acceptance of a final, revised essay, contributors must supply a print copy and a copy of the word processor file (PC MS-Word, WordPerfect, or RTF format) on a 3.5” PC formatted floppy disk or via an email attachment (preferred). Because the journal practices blind submission, the author’s name should appear only on the title page of the manuscript. Essay submissions, materials for “The Year’s Work” and “The Recovery Room,” and queries should be addressed to Karen L. Kilcup, Editor, Studies in American Humor, PO Box 26170, Department of English, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro, NC 27402-6170, USA. Contact information: klkilcup@uncg.edu; (336) 334-4696; (530) 686-8076 (fax and voice mail). Books and inquiries about book reviews should be addressed to John Bird, Book Review Editor, Studies in American Humor, Department of English, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC 29733; birdj@winthrop.edu. No responsibility will be taken for injury or loss.

The 2003 issue of Studies in American Humor will be a special issue on Southern and Southwestern humor. Any topics that address Southern or Southwestern humor are welcome, including those from a comparative perspective. Papers should be approximately 5000-8000 words in length and be prepared in MLA style. Black and white illustrations can be accommodated; contributors are responsible for obtaining and paying for any permissions.  Submissions should be received by May 1, 2003 for consideration.

A member of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ), Studies in American Humor is published annually. It is underwritten by a major grant from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
