CSD 577-01 provides
instruction for graduate level speech-language pathology majors in performing
hearing screenings. This course helps
students obtain the 20 clock hours in the minor area required by the American
Speech-Language–Hearing Association.
Clinical experience may include screening, evaluation and/or treatment
of children and adults with a variety of hearing disorders. Hours acquired from mass hearing screenings
must be supervised by a licensed audiologist. Specifically, the course will
consist of an initial training session at the beginning of the semester in
order to prepare clinicians for conducting hearing screenings. Review sessions will be held prior to each
scheduled screening as needed. Several
community hearing screenings will be offered throughout the semester for which
students will be held responsible for scheduling themselves.
Upon
completion of this course the students will:
A. Demonstrate competence in the
administration of hearing screening to persons of various ages, as well as the
use of play audiometry techniques for preschool children.
B. Demonstrate competence in the provision
of speech and language services for those with hearing impairments.
C. Identify
the need for referral or further testing.
D.
Demonstrate knowledge of documentation procedures that accompany
hearing screening.
A. Completion of 25 observation hours
B. An introduction to audiology course
(e.g., CSD 334)
A. Attend training session in hearing
screening.
B. Attend all screenings for which the
student has signed up.
C. Demonstrate ability to perform appropriate
audiometric screening and/or to provide therapy under the supervision of a
licensed speech-language pathologist and/or audiologist.
D. Complete a sufficient number of clock
hours to document the 20 hours necessary to meet ASHA requirements.
E. Complete and hand in required
documentation.
F. Adhere to the UNCG Academic Integrity
Policy (http://saf.dept.uncg.edu/studiscp/Honor.html)
Students
will be given a grade of Pass/Fail, contingent upon:
A. A signature from the supervising
clinician that indicates competency. (SLOs A,B & D)
B. A signature from the supervising
clinician that indicates that referrals have been properly identified. (SLO C)
Screening
opportunities will be posted in Room 304 Ferguson Building along with sign-up
sheets. Posting will also be available
via Blackboard. Students will be
responsible for signing up and contacting the community audiologist who will
supervise their screening. Make sure
that the audiologist will be present and obtain directions to the site.
Students
are reminded that they are responsible for completing the 20 hours over the
course of two years. It is strongly recommended
that students begin obtaining these hours in the first semester of the
first year of graduate school. During the second year they will be
competing with first year graduate students for screening opportunities and
will also be completing externships at off-campus sites.
