World Wide Web Workshop I

Internet Tools for Language Teachers


This language oriented workshop focuses on the use of the World Wide Web in the foreign language classroom, on e-mail and listserv activities, and on Internet study sites. For a discussion concerning some methodological aspects of integrating multimedia technologies into the classroom, see my Internet Presentation on Foreign Language Acquisition and Technology. Further information on the topic can be found in the Internet Workshop II (German Studies with Multimedia Tools) which describes a selection of useful German CD-ROM and software applications, and presents world wide web exercises for German Studies classes.

The list also posts and discusses German films and lectures at UNCG, "Landeskunde" projects, German news and other informational materials of interest to the German speaking community on and off campus.

E. MUDs, MOOs, and Chat Groups (Multi-User Domains; MOOs = Object Oriented)

MOOs are internet accessible, text mediated, virtual environments well suited for distance learning and the practice of foreign languages. One can enter these Internet domains through a www link (Consult: Moo Sampler) or through a telnet connection. MOOs of interest include:

MOO Information

MOOs are virtual environments or electronically constructed social spaces which offer participants the opportunity to interact with each other online through written dialogs and conversations. For users, MOOs can be described as constellations of spaces, or "rooms", within which multiple individuals can congregate and interact. Movement is possible from room to room, by typing in cardinal directions, or via "teleporting", which allows immediate transport to rooms not adjacent to one's present location. There are many educational and foreign language MOOs which provide students with excellent forums for practicing their informal reading and writing skills.
