Foster Falls on the New River, SW Virginia. The New River cuts through relatively resistant sedimentary rocks at Hematite Mountain, dropping over numerous ledges. The river doubles its width through the Falls area and several mid-channel islands are produced just downstream. |

One of several shallow sinkholes in the karst near Foster Falls, VA. This area, which is still agricultural, was once the site of an important train depot, iron furnace, and shot tower (a tall wooden structure used to make lead shot during the Civil War) are preserved as historical sites nearby. |

The view east from Draper Mountain VA in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province. The bucolic scenery hides Interstate 81 near the foot of the mountain. The Blue Ridge province is the far skyline. The town of Pulaski is just to the west on the other side of Draper Mountain. |

The Carter Wayside, a small park featuring a bend of Reed Creek that has been severed from the channel by old hwy 11 (Lee Hwy) without completely severing the hydrologic connection. Water flows through deep culverts emplaced under the highway. |
