I. Psychological Aspects of Sport Injury & Rehabilitation

Longitudinal prospective study of psychosocial risk factors for sport injury

  • Initiated a multidisciplinary clinical research project, UNCG Injury Prevention Screening, with UNCG Sport Medicine, Athletic Training, and the Dept of Athletics.
  • Began annual preseason psychological and physical health screenings with all UNCG Varsity student-athletes in 2005.
  • Ongoing monitoring of student-athletes' physical and mental health status

Educational programs for sportsmedicine professionals

  • Developed and currently teach a graduate course (ESS 743: Psychological Aspects of Sport Injury & Rehabilitation) which is offered every fall term on Thursdays 9am-12pm (See UNCG Courses).
  • Develop and evaluate educational programs for athletic trainers.
  • Designing and implementing a web-based educational program for athletic trainers.

II. Applied Sport Psychology
  • Supervise graduate practicum (ESS 746: Practicum in Applied Sport Psychology) as students' provide sport psychology services to UNCG Varsity athletes & teams, local high school and youth sport participants.
  • Created and supervise practicum placement in injury adjustment and recovery within the UNCG Athletic Training Room, which involves MST with athletes, consultation with staff, and structured training to graduate students in the entry-level athletic training program as part of their capstone experience.
  • Consult on and assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of psychological and other related services for UNCG student-athletes .
  • Established relationships with other departmental faculty and university staff including Dance, Counseling Education and Development (CED), Psychology, Business, Musci, etc.

III. Health and Exercise Psychology

  • Research, consultation, and educational programming (staff training) for UNCG Exercise & Wellness programs (i.e., Campus Recreation/Fitness Center staff training on recognition and assessment of exercise addiction).
  • Created and supervise practicum placement in exercise adherence consulting for Energize Your Life, a 10-week weight management program offered through Campus Recreation & Fitness.
  • Provide adherence counseling to healthy and medical/disease populations through exisitng exercise or wellness programs at UNCG and in the Piedmont Triad.
  • Consultation with ESS faculty and staff regarding exisitng and/or planned projects involving psychological aspects of exercise and health.
