Frequently Asked Questions
Where
do you get your dogs?
- Goldens come into our program from private owners who can
no longer keep them, from animal shelters, or from people who
have found a stray Golden that has not been claimed.
-
Do
you ever get puppies?
- Most dogs who enter our program are in the 2-4 year old range,
but we do sometimes get dogs as young as 4-6 months as well
as "senior" Goldens aged 8 years or more.
-
Are
all your dogs spayed or neutered?
- Yes. Groups like ours exist precisely because there are too
many dogs being bred by people who are not reputable, professional
breeders or because owners don't spay/neuter their dogs and
allow unplanned breedings to take place. So many good dogs
are already unwanted or not cared for that we do not encourage
any breeding with the Goldens in our program.
-
Are
Goldens good with children?
- Yes, most Goldens are well-tempered and eager to please their
human companions. BUT it is important to remember that a Golden
Retriever is an animal, not a human, and any animal can display
behaviors that can be dangerous if not understood. For this
reason, we encourage families to learn as much as possible
about the breed and especially to enroll in an obedience training
class. We caution all our families that small children should never be
left unattended with a dog (for the sake of child and dog alike).
-
Can
I keep the
dog outside most of the time?
- If you want a dog that will be happy outside most of the
time, you should look for a different breed. Most Goldens want
to be with people and will be unhappy if left outside, no matter
how nice a dog house is provided. Many Goldens come into our
program precisely because they have been living as primarily
outside dogs and have begun to bark, dig, jump fences, etc.

Do
I have to have a fence in order to adopt from TGRR?
- In most cases we do require a fenced yard or other secure
area within a yard, but we will consider homes without fences
if we have dogs for whom such a situation is appropriate.
-
How
much is your adoption fee?
- Effective September 13, 2010 the adoption fee is on a sliding
scale as follows:
$350 for Goldens up to 1 year old
$250 for Goldens 1 year + 1 day -
up to 8 years old
$100 for Goldens 8 years + 1 day -
up to 10 years old
for dogs 10 years + 1 day and over
- we appreciate a donation of your choice
This fee includes a 6 month supply of Interceptor (heartworm
preventative), any current medications the dog may have, and
a complimentary membership in TGRR for one year.
-
Do
you allow long distance adoptions?
- Yes, but when we have more families than dogs, we give priority
to those in our own area where we have been able to do a home
visit.
