Eleusis

The remains of the sanctuary to Demeter and Kore at Eleusis are visible in this aerial view with the Telesterion in the center.
The image to the right shows a plan of the Telesterion, the hall where the secret initiation rites of the Mysteries took place. A large building which could hold up to three thousand people, the telesterion had no windows and many pillars, guaranteeing it would have been dark inside. The rectangular stone structure near the center of the building was called the Anaktoron. It had one door and contained the throne of the Hierophant (the priest who "shows holy things") who alone was allowed to enter it.
