Elreta Alexander (1919-1998) was the first African American woman to graduate from Columbia University Law School when she received her degree in 1945, as well as the first to practice law in North Carolina (in Greensboro from 1947-1968) and be elected to the bench when she was elected District Court judge for Guilford County in 1968.

On February 23 from 5-7 p.m. UNCG will showcase some of the materials from the Elreta Alexander Papers, housed in the Special Collections and University Archives.

Dr. Virginia L. Summey, author of “The Life of Elreta Melton Alexander: Activism within the Courts,” will talk about Alexander’s life and legacy. The event is at the Oden Brewing Company at 802 West Gate City Boulevard in Greensboro.

This event is part of Hop into History. More information may be found on the Facebook event page.
