The Congregational Social Work Education Initiative
Fran Pearson (MSW, North Carolina A & T State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) is the Project Coordinator for The Congregational Social Work Education Initiative (CSWEI).
offers master and bachelor level social work students from North Carolina A & T State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro a non-traditional
opportunity to complete their internship requirements by providing community-based social work services to Greensboro area congregants/residents.
Partnering with nurses from the Congregational Nurse Program at Cone Health and working with designated churches and other faith-based entities, the social work intern and congregational nurse provide health and mental health/wellness services to underserved, vulnerable individuals in easily accessible, community based settings, using an interdisciplinary team approach.
In the vast majority of cases and locations, CSWEI provides the only access to social work services to the population in need. The program has been funded since 2007, primarily by the Cone Health Foundation, and has received approximately $650,000 in support.
