Gabe Barker planned to be a teacher and was working toward a credential at UNCG when he realized he really wanted to follow his parents into the restaurant business. Today, he’s at the helm of Pizzeria Mercato in downtown Carrboro, where he strives to give his patrons “an experience they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.” He says pizza is “the coal that drives the train engine” of the vegetable-focused menu, which also includes salads, homemade pastas, and gelato. Many of the ingredients come from the nationally recognized farmers market across the street, which inspires his cooking.
Men’s soccer wins fifth SoCon tournament title

The No. 7 team now goes on to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament after defeating the Mercer Bears, 2-1, on Saturday night. With the win at UNCG Soccer Stadium, the Spartans extended its unbeaten streak to 9-0-1 at home, the first undefeated season at home since 2002.

A self-proclaimed “big nerd,” Theo Noussi is fascinated by nanoscience, which requires the use of sophisticated microscopy to study at a very small scale. Noussi, in his fifth year of a doctoral program in the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) at UNCG, is a native of Cameroon and the youngest of eight children. He came to the United States six years ago to earn a master’s degree in earth science, with a specialization in environmental science, at North Carolina Central University.
Men’s soccer advances to SoCon championship

Saturday’s 6-3 semifinals victory against Furman was a season best for the Spartans. They are now the top-seeded team and will take on No. 3 Mercer at home on Saturday, November 12.

The voting rate for young people is on the rise, and UNCG’s rate is among the highest in the nation. Seventy-four percent of the student body voted in the 2020 election. The students, faculty, and staff behind the UNCG Votes Initiative worked to keep that rate up for the 2022 midterm elections.
