Smart Music Project

The School of Music at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro is dedicated to developing and integrating new technologies into all areas of music education. One of the most exciting and useful tools available today for performance oriented students is Smart Music software available from Coda Music. This computer software aids developing musicians in a number of key areas: first and most important, although the software is not intended to replace an accompanist, it will play - with complete accuracy - the piano or orchestra accompaniment to any piece for which a smart music program is available. The technology goes beyond the traditional music-minus-one recordings in that tempos and expression can be completely controlled; moreover, with the "intelligent accompaniment" function activated, the music will follow the performer's tempo changes. The program also comes with a metronome, a tuner, a tuning trainer, playback loops and more. Indeed, we feel so strongly about this technology that the School of Music has dedicated two practice studios entirely to the use of Smart Music. Until recently, however, the accompaniments availabe for saxophone were limited to a handful of core pieces. Through a generous grant from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, the woodwind area of the School of Music has begun a project to record accompaniments for the major repertoire of each of the woodwind instruments on Smart Music. To date, the following saxophone pieces are available to UNCG saxophone students on Smart Music:
