Biography

Maria Lim’s current research focuses on the educational aspects of global perspectives, culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racial discrimination, and the critical decolonization of Asian pedagogies to promote cultural diversity and social justice. In recent years, Maria has collaborated with other Asian American art education scholars to investigate how the counter-narratives of Asian American art educators can challenge dominant narratives in art education. Through various collaborative research projects, she has also explored how the counter-narratives of minorities can be integrated into art teacher education curricula, providing diverse and inclusive representations of art, history, and culture that extend beyond a Eurocentric perspective.

Maria Lim’s teaching approach emphasizes culturally responsive pedagogy, equity, diversity, inclusion, social justice, and global perspectives. She believes that education should empower students to examine the world around them critically, challenge the status quo, and work towards a more just and equitable society. Maria’s goal as an educator is to prepare students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the 21st century by fostering collaboration between teachers and students in a safe and supportive environment. Maria Lim was honored by the North Carolina Art Education Association as the NCAEA Higher Education Art Educator of the Year in 2014. The National Art Education Association also recognized her as the Southeastern Regional Higher Education Division Art Educator of the Year 2015.

Maria Lim has been the director and founder of the UNCG Summer Arts & Design Intensive (SADI) since 2014. This program offers high school students an advanced and engaging summer visual arts experience. Maria has developed the program to help students immerse themselves in the arts, enhance their creative skills, and explore potential art careers. As the camp director, Maria supervises a group of pre-service teachers who work as camp counselors and studio assistants. These roles allow them to complete their service-learning practicum hours required for the teaching licensure program. She provides guidance to help them gain practical experience in community art education and encourages them to reflect on classroom management, student motivation strategies, and creative teaching methods. Through this process, Maria helps develop art education students’ educational leadership and culturally responsive perspectives, making them more competent teaching candidates.
