With the fall semester in full swing, staying safe on campus is extremely important – follow these simple tips to stay Spartan Safe at UNCG.
WATCHING YOUR WALK
When walking around campus (and around Greensboro) – make sure you are staying aware of your surroundings. Use designated crosswalks and look up from your mobile device when crossing the street. When you are at a crosswalk with a pedestrian call button, press it. Do not cross until you are given the okay and drivers are aware you are crossing the street.
SECURE YOUR STUFF
After you park on campus, lock your car, and make sure your valuables are not visible. A good rule of thumb is to put the valuables in the trunk.
If you want extra protection for your possessions, UNCG Police can provide an official marking for textbooks and other items in the event that they are stolen, and someone attempts to resell them.
DON’T LEAVE YOUR BELONGINGS
If you’re studying in a public building and need to step away temporarily, don’t just leave your stuff where you were sitting. Take your items with you.
If you misplace an item of high value, the UNCG Police Department collects items including but not limited to: laptops, tablets, iPods, gaming systems, cellphones, jewelry, currency, checks, credit cards, and any form of identification other than UNCG Spartan Cards. BUDDY UP
When walking on campus at night, find a buddy to go with you. If there isn’t anyone to accompany you, use the “Friend Walk” feature on the Spartan Safe app to have a friend virtually watch you as you walk from one location to another. You can also use “Walk Safe” on the Spartan Safe app and have a police officer walk you to your destination.
RIDE SAFE
Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are popular when you need to get from A to B, but make sure you’re riding safely. Remember to verify your ride every time by double checking information in the app:
- Match the license plate
- Match the car make and model
- Check the driver’s photo
If you’re requesting a ride at night – make sure you request the ride in a well-lit area and if you see something out of the ordinary, trust your instincts.
Friends look out for each other. When you’re going out, tell a friend and have them do the same. Let them know you’re safe and use Spartan Safe to share your ride.
