The Student Experience

  • This program is designed for elementary teachers interested in improving their science teaching, cultivating their professional trajectory, and becoming leaders in North Carolina elementary science education.
  • Research interests include science education, engineering education, equity, culture, identity, and science education reform. Students will also have the opportunity to get involved with the HERP Project, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. The purpose of HERP project is to expose participants to ecological fieldwork by engaging in a variety of field science projects related to local reptile and amphibian species.
  • In the program, students will engage in citizen science projects, present at professional science and education conferences, engage in teacher research, and use the School of Education’s SELF Design Studio for making and engineering design projects.

After Graduation

  • Graduates possess hands-on experience through observations and student teaching in local schools.
  • As of May 2020, the median salary for curriculum specialists was $66,970 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Graduates may be eligible for positions such as: K-6 science specialist, district science specialist, elementary science coach, curriculum developer, and facilitator of professional development.
