Kim Cuny’s Work with Speaking Center Earns Communication Award

Communication Studies faculty member Kim Cuny has received the 2023 Betty Jo Welch Award for continuing and outstanding service to the Carolinas Communication Association (CCA) and the professions.

CCA recognized Kim for 20 years of developing and maintaining the communication centers subset of communication studies at the national level. Kim was the inaugural director of The University Speaking Center at UNCG from 2003 to 2023. She helped turn the Speaking Center into a national model, garnering 25 awards, 48 faculty-published articles, 29 faculty research presentations, 14 faculty-published chapters, 55 student research presentations, 31 student-published articles, 6 student-published chapters, 4-time host of the National Association of Communication Centers Conference, community outreach, and national service to the discipline.

The Betty Jo Welch Award is given to a CCA member who has demonstrated “continuing and outstanding service to the association and the professions.”

UNCG faculty have a influential presence within the CCA, an organization which supports the academic work of communication faculty in North and South Carolina. Cuny joins a group of incredible UNCG faculty members who have been honored with CCA awards in the past.
