The Post-Baccalaureate Degree in Dance Education (PBL) is an entirely online program designed to provide initial teacher certification in pre K-12 Dance Education to individuals who have an undergraduate degree in dance or a related field from a regionally accredited university and a desire to work in K-12 classrooms. The PBL program is designed for anyone seeking initial teaching certification in dance education. This program is ideal for working professionals who need to work from a distance and during summer.

We admit students into the PBL program each spring in April to begin the program in the summer. Acceptance into the  program is competitive. Candidates for the program from North Carolina, as well as other states and countries, are welcomed.

Program Distinctions

UNCG is the only university in the North Carolina system that offers graduate degrees in Dance, and the only program where graduate students with initial Dance K-12 teaching licensure can earn advanced dance teacher licensure. 

UNCG Dance faculty, 50% who are faculty of color, are active professionals in the dance field. Professor Robin Gee curates the annual Greensboro Dance Film Festival and also curates national and international Dance Film festivals.  Associate Professor B.J. Sullivan is known internationally for her Safety Technique dance technique. Other Dance faculty bring professional experience and innovative pedagogical approaches that reflect the depth and breadth of School of Dance faculty expertise.

  • Facilities include seven studios, a fully-equipped dance theater, a screen dance editing classroom, dressing rooms, and an interior garden courtyard reserved for dance students. 
  • Live accompaniment is provided for many technique classes.
  • To connect students to the profession, the schools regularly bring in guest teachers and  choreographers. Recent guests include: Camille A. Brown, Kristin Daniel, Gerri Houlihan, Juel D. Lane, Helen Simoneau, and Maleek Washington. 

The Student Experience

  • The PBL program is designed for anyone seeking initial teaching certification in dance education. This program is ideal for working professionals who need to work from a distance and during summer.
  • The Dance PBL program can be completed in four semesters with students enrolling in coursework in the following progression: Summer, Fall, Spring, Summer. Students applying from fields other than dance education may be required to take prerequisite courses during the program. Students are able to work full time while completing this program. Students are required to participate in field experiences and full-time student teaching in high-quality inclusive settings. These experiences are completed in public school settings arranged by the student and approved by the Director of Dance Education. Students may be required to leave their jobs to complete this aspect of the program in one of these settings.

After Graduation

After completing field experiences and full-time student teaching in high-quality inclusive public school settings most program graduates are employed in the public schools.
