Online Master's in K-12 Science Education

The Master’s of Education with a concentration in K-12 Science Education supports current teachers to become instructional leaders in science education. The course of study gives an in-depth exploration into issues related to curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, research, and content for science education.

The 100% online program emphasizes engaging, rigorous, and responsive education in science, engineering, technology, and environmental studies at appropriate grade levels for all students from kindergarten through high school. Graduates of this program will be prepared to make kids into active participants in science through classwork and hands-on experimentation.

WHat Makes The Online Master’s in Science Education Program Distinct

The Science Education concentration addresses science education across kindergarten through high school, allowing educators to explore instructional approaches appropriate for different developmental levels. The program is offered 100% online, making it accessible for full-time teachers throughout North Carolina and beyond. UNCG is authorized to offer the program nationwide, although licensure rules vary by state.

Students within the Master’s in Elementary Science Education can access to UNCG’s SELF Design Studio. This makerspace contains 3D printers, robotics, art supplies, and circuitry kits for fostering innovative ideas and merging creativity with science.

They will study within the UNC Greensboro School of Education, one of the nation’s “Top Graduate Schools of Education” by the U.S. News & World Report.

Path to a Master’s in K-12 Science Education

While studying for their Master’s in K-12 Science Education, students gain first-hand experience through observations and student teaching in local schools. They learn how to build children’s knowledge of science through observation, experimentation, and reviewing data. They learn how to impart age-appropriate lessons in geography, biology, astronomy, physics, and environmental science.

The curriculum extends beyond traditional science instruction by integrating:

  • Science-technology-society connections
  • Engineering design
  • Technology integration
  • Environmental education
  • Nature of science and scientific literacy

Students can also take Teaching and Learning in Makerspaces, which focuses on incorporating engineering and hands-on design into science instruction.

Students at UNCG frequently enjoy opportunities to attend and present at conferences.

Funding and Scholarships While Getting Licensure

Each year, the School of Education awards over $1 million in scholarships and graduate assistantships to students.

The Haggai Academy is a scholarship program that provides scholarships of up to $8,000 per year, as well as a wide range of additional enrichment opportunities, for non-traditional students (24 years of age or older) pursuing an initial teacher license.

After Graduating With a Master’s in K-12 Science Education
