Biography
Chris Cassidy’s areas of expertise includes sculpture, digital imaging, video and graphic art. He worked as an illustrator and designer before returning to school for a graduate degree in sculpture at the State University of New York at Albany. His work has appeared in group shows, festivals and screenings nationally and internationally. He has been commissioned for work by private and public organizations, including permanent installations at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and the State University of New York.
Cassidy’s work represents an attempt to address ecological and social histories by focusing on the symbolic role of the artist as observer, collector, interpreter and manipulator. He use installation, video and digital media to explore the ways both the artist and the viewer interact with specific places, how that experience is mediated by pre-existing mental constructs like maps and models, and the potential of technology to radically alter the perceptual relationship between individuals and their environment.
Since arriving at UNCG in 2005, Professor Cassidy has served as Graduate Director and Director of the School of Art, and is currently the co-Director of Undergraduate Studies in Art.
