Biography

David Teachout returned to teaching in the UNCG School of Music in 2023 after serving for 8 years as Director/Associate Vice Provost in the role of lead administrator for the University Teaching and Learning Commons, which is responsible for providing faculty with research-based programs and services that promote effective teaching and cultivate student academic success across the university.  In this role, he oversaw the Instructional and Multimedia Design Area, the Learning Innovations and Pedagogy Area, the Residential Colleges Office (RCO), and the Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Office (URSCO).  Prior to this time, he served for 11 years as Head of the Music Education Division/Department where he oversaw degree programs ranging from the Bachelor of Music in Music Education to the PhD in Music Education.  He also served as the Institutional Representative for UNCG to the National Association for Schools of Music (NASM) and authored the NASM self-study report for UNCG’s 2014-2015 successful accreditation renewal process.  He is past Chair of the National Executive Committee of the Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE).  His research area is in music teacher development and his work has been presented at state, regional, national, and international conferences (in Canada, China, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Sweden, and the United Kingdom), and published in numerous top-tiered journals.  Additionally, he is co-author of The Journey from Music Student to Teacher: A Professional Approach, 2nd edition, published by Routledge.
