Biography

Dr. Haeun (Grace) Bang is an Assistant Professor of Apparel Design in the Department of Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies (CARS) at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro (UNCG). She earned her Ph.D. degree in Apparel Studies, minoring in Product Design, from the University of Minnesota. She received her MS degree in Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design with a concentration in Aesthetics in Dress from Seoul National University, and a BA degree in Fashion Design from Mongolia International University. 

Dr. Bang joined the CARS Department in the Bryan School of Business and Economics at UNCG in Fall 2019 as a Visiting Assistant Professor and has been working as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor since Fall 2020. At UNCG, she teaches design-related undergraduate courses, including Studio II: Patternmaking/Draping, Studio IV: Technical and Creative Design, Portfolio Development for Apparel Design, and Technology Foundations of Design in the Digital Environment. She has actively served as a faculty advisor and mentor for undergraduate students’ research and creative projects. Additionally, she has served as a master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation co-chair and committee member for graduate students. In 2021, Dr. Bang received the Bryan School Teaching Excellence Award for Junior Faculty Track in her first year as an assistant professor. 

Her research interests encompass sustainability from environmental, social, cultural, technological, economic, and educational perspectives. Dr. Bang has published research articles in refereed journals and presented her research at various juried national and international conferences. As a design faculty member, she employs various design techniques to create innovative designs that are sustainable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Dr. Bang has participated in numerous design exhibitions and presented her creative designs at national and international conferences, including the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) and the Costume Society of America (CSA). 

Dr. Bang has served as a reviewer for multiple academic journals, including Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal, Fashion and Textiles, Fashion Practice, International Journal of Costume and Fashion, and International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education. She has also been a reviewer for international conferences, including the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Design Exhibition entries, Abstracts and Paper of Distinction Award for ITAA’s Design and Product Development (DPD) and Historic (HIS) tracks, and the International Conference on Clothing and Textiles (ICCT).
