Get to Know Us

Kathy immigrated to the United States, from Peru in June 1996. She received her Associates degree in Business Administration from Guilford Technical Community College in May 2006 and graduated from UNCG with a B.S. in International Business and a minor in Economics in May 2008. She completed the Foundations of Professional Interpreting training from UNCG-Center for New Carolinians and serves as a professional interpreter in the community.

Kathy is passionate about her work and the people that she has had the opportunity to serve. Her own struggles and personal adjustment to life and culture in this country have made her more aware of the needs and strengths of various communities that call Guilford County their second home.  Her work with the NC Latino community started in 2000 at the Women’s Resource Center of Greater Greensboro, where she worked as a Bilingual Specialist and Peer Counselor. In 2002, she accepted a position at the Center for New North Carolinians as a Lay Health Advisor/Latino Outreach Coordinator.  Initially, Kathy was responsible for developing a health education curriculum for the Latino/Hispanic community, facilitating educational seminars, identifying and assessing clients’ needs, advocating for clients’ rights, and promoting leadership. Over the years, Kathy has also expanded her position to include interpretation, translation, and the facilitation of dialogue between various ethnic communities within the Piedmont Triad Region.  Kathy is seen as a leader in the community.

She has served on various non-profit board of directors.  She has been instrumental in developing community-based programming, such as a tutoring program at Reedy Fork Elementary School, which has developed into a thriving community center serving the Oakwood Forest community and providing both adult and youth programs.  Kathy has also helped to establish the Latino Community Coalition of Guilford, an initiative that focuses on advocacy, education, and networking.  She is passionate and dedicated to improving the lives of immigrants and helping to build bridges with the broader community.
