Kelly Joyce joined the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences in 2025. Prior to joining UNCG, Dr. Joyce served as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Drexel University and was the founding director of the Center for Science, Technology and Society at Drexel University.
Dr. Joyce is a medical sociologist who studies the cultural, political and economic factors that shape technology use (or nonuse) in US healthcare. She received her B.A. In Anthropology from Brown University and her Ph.D. in Sociology from Boston College. She is the author of the award winning book “Magnetic Appeal: MRI and the Myth of Transparency” (Cornell University Press, 2008) and is co-editor of “Technogenarians: Studying Health and Illness through an Aging, Science, and Technology Lens” (Wiley-Blackwell Publishers, 2010). Her research is situated at the crossroads of medical sociology and science and technology studies. Professor Joyce’s research on the ethics of algorithms, big data and smart textiles has been funded by awards from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Joyce previously was an associate professor of sociology at the College of William and Mary (2002-2012). She also served as a program director for the Science, Technology, and Society program and the Ethics Education in Science and Engineering program at the National Science Foundation during 2009-2011. She received the Director’s Award for Collaborative Integration for contributing to the education of ethical scientists, interagency collaboration and extraordinary efforts in integrating ethical expertise with scientific knowledge in 2011. More recently, she served as the Director for the Center for Science, Technology and Society at Drexel University in 2012-2018.
