Get to Know Us

Originally from Laos, Khouan came to the US as a refugee with her family in 1982.  Growing up in New York City, she was exposed to people from different countries and backgrounds.  As a refugee, Khouan can appreciate the struggles and victories many immigrants and refugees experience as they try to get acclimated to their new home.  Her desire to work with immigrants and refugees prompted her to pursue a degree in Sociology.  In 1995, equipped with a Sociology degree from Manhattanville College, she moved to Greensboro, NC in pursuit of a career working with immigrants and refugees.  In 1997, her search led her to the AmeriCorps ACCESS Project, where she served as a member, site supervisor, program coordinator, and currently as director.  Khouan’s primary responsibilities include: recruitment of AmeriCorps members and partner agencies, placement of members with host sites, and program operations.  Additionally, Khouan is a professional interpreter trainer at CNNC. She has 3 lovely children and a husband who is originally from Mexico.  In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.
