Bio and Education

Originally from San Diego, CA, I observed how disinvested communities have limited access to safe recreational spaces and affordable, nutritious food. Through my community-building work with state health agencies, I also saw the strengths and resourcefulness communities hold that are too often overlooked. I embrace this duality by partnering with communities to co-design programs that promote physical activity and expand access to nutritious food. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, staying active through cycling and racket sports, and winning card/board games. I’m always glad to connect with students and collaborators interested in this work – please reach out.

Dr. Dugger earned his Master of Public Health from the University of Oklahoma and his Ph.D. in Exercise Science from the University of South Carolina. He completed his postdoctoral training at Oregon Health & Science University-Portland State University, where his research examined food security among Black emerging adults. His research applies asset-based, participatory frameworks to develop multilevel interventions that promote physical activity and improve access to nutritious food to reduce cardiometabolic risk among young adults. He uses wearable technology to capture 24-hour movement behaviors, validated dietary assessment tools, and qualitative methods to understand the context shaping these behaviors.
