Tom Birchmeier is an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology. Tom graduated from Hope College (2010) with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and completed his post-professional master’s degree in athletic training at Indiana University (2012). He served as the assistant athletic trainer and sports performance coordinator for strength and conditioning at Benedictine University (Lisle, IL) for 5 years. After leaving Ben U, Tom completed his doctoral degree at Michigan State University (2021) under the mentorship of Dr. Christopher Kuenze. In 2021, Tom joined the MOTION Science Institute at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill as a postdoctoral research associate under the mentorship of Dr. Troy Blackburn. The goal of Tom’s research is to facilitate returning to sport and physical activity after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) through improved rehabilitation practices and preparticipation screening.
