A new report co-authored by UNC Greensboro faculty and a graduate student seeks to remove obstacles that may prevent more families from benefitting from child care opportunities.
This new brief was published by the Hispanic Research Center. It was authored in part by Psychology Professor Dr. Julia Mendez Smith and Human Development and Family Studies Professor Dr. Danielle Crosby, along with UNCG graduate student Christina Stephens.
They write that North Carolina frontline worker practices may facilitate or restrict eligible Hispanic families’ access to Child Care subsidies. “Our findings suggest that subsidy administration practices ‘on the ground’ sometimes vary from state policies as they are ‘on the books,'” the report states.
The report assesses some of the challenges that Hispanic families have in navigating the system when seeking to apply for the child care subsidy program in North Carolina. The authors’ hope is that they will prompt more research to facilitate caseworkers’ selection of more inclusive versus restrictive practices.
