Traffic changes during construction

Steam supplies heat for most campus buildings, and it is piped around campus from the central steam plant on Oakland Avenue. Over many decades the steam infrastructure has deteriorated and is in need of replacement.

This project replaces problematic steam and condensate piping along Theta Street and across Stirling Street between Manholes 74 and 73B. New piping provides many years of reliable heating infrastructure and greater energy efficiency from the central campus plant.

Signs will direct drivers and pedestrians to alternate paths away from the construction zone. Accessible routes will be provided and building egress will be maintained as much as is safely possible.

Bus passengers should regularly check Parking Operations throughout the construction for changes to their routes.

Thank you, everyone, in advance for your patience and mindfulness of the construction crews who will be making these long-term infrastructure improvements to campus.

Construction schedule

Phase 1 (May 8–July 15)

Map shows the construction zone for phase 1 of steam distribution replacement on Theta Street.
  1. The Construction Work area shown in red will be fenced in.
  2. Theta Street will be closed.
  3. Stirling will be signed for closure except for local access to Mossman parking lot from Spring Garden Street.
  4. A temporary 12’ lane at the top of the Mossman lot exit onto Stirling will allow Mossman occupants to leave north on Stirling. This is not a detour for through traffic.
  5. The Walker Parking Deck entrance and exit on Theta will be closed during the entire project. The Walker Street entrance will be open during both phases of construction.
  6. Access to the Bryan mechanical room parking lot to and from Theta will be maintained throughout all phases.
  7. Entrances and exits to the Bryan Building will be maintained through all phases, but walking routes outside the building will be altered. Accessibility will be maintained.

Phase 2 (June 15–October 15)

Map shows the construction zone for phase 2 of steam distribution replacement on Theta Street.
  1. Stirling will reopen July 31. Theta will remain closed.
  2. Mossman will operate as normal.
  3. All pedestrian fire egress to Bryan will remain open but walking routes will be altered around the construction fencing area.
  4. The Theta Street entrance and exit to the Walker Parking Deck will remain closed. Parking deck traffic will be able to enter from and exit onto Stirling Street per normal operating conditions.
  5. The sidewalk on the south side of Theta Street will be closed. The north side will remain open. Signs will direct pedestrians safely around the site. Accessibility will be maintained.
