Spartans know that “finding your way here” is heavily encouraged through all programs and services offered at UNC Greensboro. Because of that, students have access to more than 250 student organizations.

In a new Spartan Club Showcase series, we highlight a few of the many different student organizations that embody academics, service, arts, and athletics with one overarching goal in mind: community. Get excited to participate in a club that best resonates with you.

Melanin in Medicine

The club Melanin in Medicine (MIM) has grown increasingly popular since it began at UNCG. It provides students with mentorship, networking opportunities, professional development, and community outreach.

“Looking for a supportive community for underrepresented students pursuing medicine and health care fields?”

Zariah Johnson, MIM founder and president

MIM’s members say the organization creates an uplifting environment for minority students to discuss challenges and successes in order to break barriers in health care. Zariah Johnson, Public Health Education major in the School of Health and Human Sciences, says the organization has helped her grow as a leader, a mentor, and an aspiring healthcare professional. “It’s taught me the importance of advocacy and representation in medicine,” she says.

Johnson shares what makes MIM so special:

MIM provides students with mentorship, academic resources, professional connections, hands-on experiences, and a strong support system. We host events that allow students to interact with professionals, gain insight into the medical field, and develop the skills needed to succeed in their careers.

Although this is MIM’s first year on campus, we have already made a significant impact by building a strong foundation. We’ve connected with healthcare professionals, established valuable partnerships, and secured funding to support our events and initiatives. Our membership continues to grow as more students recognize the importance of representation in medicine, and we are excited to expand our reach, create meaningful opportunities, and leave a lasting legacy on campus.

One of our most popular activities is our “MIMonade,” our lemonade stand at the UNCG clock tower.

Through event planning, networking with professionals, and supporting fellow students, I’ve built confidence in my abilities and developed a strong sense of community.

Students can follow MIM on Instagram to learn about how to join and attend general meetings.
