UNCG Board of Trustees welcomes newest members

UNC Greensboro today announced the addition of two new members to its Board of Trustees, as well as the reappointment of veteran Trustees Mae Douglas and Linda Sloan to second four-year terms.

Oita Coleman and Dale Phipps, UNCG alumni with tremendous business, civic, and community credentials, were appointed by the UNC System Board of Governors on April 20 to four-year terms beginning July 1, 2023. They will fill vacancies left by Mona Edwards and Brad Hayes, who will rotate off the Board as of June 30, following eight and ten years of service, respectively, and multiple stints as officers and standing committee chairs.

Oita Coleman currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Open Voice Network, the open-source community of the Linux Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium that provides a neutral, trusted hub for developers and organizations to code, manage, and scale open technology projects and ecosystems. In that role, Coleman is responsible for development of the Foundation’s privacy, security, and ethical use portfolio, and has led the research and development of voice-specific guidance for both the protection of individual and commercial user data privacy and security for consumer-facing enterprises worldwide. She is the former Vice President of Research and Development for Software Quality at SAS Institute with oversight of implementation of global processes, standards, and policies for software development life cycles that drove delivery of high-quality products and customer satisfaction. With more than thirty years of executive experience in the tech industry, Coleman has been celebrated for her ability to cultivate relationships and leverage talent and resources to create exemplary teams. She has been recognized as among the Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Tech by the National Diversity Council. She also received the inaugural Great Place to Work® For All™ Leadership Award recognizing women leaders from businesses on the “Best Companies to Work For” list compiled by Fortune 100. Additionally, her efforts were recognized by US Black Engineer & IT Magazine as “Women Who Make a Difference in Technology.” 

Coleman’s prior service to her alma mater includes membership on the College of Arts & Sciences Advancement Council, the Light the Way Campaign Steering Committee, and support for enrichment and faculty fellowship funds in the College. Coleman earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She resides in the Raleigh-Durham area and completes a second term on the North Carolina Central University Board of Trustees as of June 30.

Dale Phipps

Dale Phipps is a Senior Vice President at Laboratory Corporation of America (Labcorp) with over 35 years of experience as a key financial, internal audit, and risk management executive. During that time, he has provided strong leadership to corporations, Fortune 500 boards, and audit committees to optimize business processes, including the establishment and maturation of financial reporting and internal control processes for large public companies. Phipps brings deep experience in risk assessment and mitigation including the establishment of governance structures resulting in significant financial returns and operational efficiencies and synergies, as well as strategic improvements in data and cyber security. He is also recognized for his ability to navigate financial requirements for global operations including establishment and optimization of financial governance processes for operations in Europe, Singapore, and China. At Labcorp, Phipps is responsible for the global internal audit operation including financial regulatory oversight and enterprise risk management, and has successfully overseen establishment and development of Labcorp’s internal audit function. He has been instrumental in leading risk management and control processes across the enterprise, resulting in significant financial and operational improvements. 

Phipps’ prior service to his alma mater includes membership on the Accounting and Finance Advisory Board at the Bryan School of Business and Economics, Excellence Foundation Board, and University Committee on Honorary Degrees, establishment of endowed scholarships for athletics, accounting, and creative writing, and named spaces in the School of Nursing and the Coleman Athletics Building. He holds a BS in Accounting and a BA in Biology, both from UNC Greensboro. He and wife Barbara have three adult children and reside in Burlington, NC.

Said UNCG Board of Trustees Chair, Betsy Oakley, “We are so grateful to Mona Edwards and Brad Hayes for their years of dedication to and advocacy for UNCG. Their contributions to the university and to this Board are immeasurable and we know they will continue to be active and engaged Spartans. They will be sorely missed on the Board, but we are delighted that UNCG graduates Oita Coleman and Dale Phipps will join us in their stead. They will be tremendous assets, not only for their technological and fiscal expertise and broad network of connections, which are particularly valuable at present, but also for their depth of personal knowledge of and experience with UNCG. We have no doubt they will serve the university well.”

In addition, the General Assembly is expected to appoint two new trustees in May for four-year terms beginning July 1. Maura Crenshaw, SGA president-elect, will also join the board as an ex-officio member.
