The Greensboro area hasn’t had measurable snowfall since January of 2022, but the snow drought came to an end just in time for our students’ move back to campus for the Spring 2025 semester.
Many Spartans returned from winter break on Friday, January 10, before the snow began to fall around 3:00 p.m. By Saturday morning, unofficial campus measurements showed 1.5 inches of snow covered in a .15 inch glaze of ice.
Moving in a Winter Wonderland
While Spartans took advantage of the rare opportunity to sled on Petty Hill, make snow angels, and engage in friendly snowball fights, staff made sure campus roads were clear and dining services were available.
Weather advisories prompted the University to close to non-essential staff through the weekend, but Facilities Management made sure main roads, parking decks and lots, and sidewalks to residence halls, dining halls, and the Elliott University Center were clear.
“We are incredibly grateful to all our staff for not only carrying out their regular duties but also stepping in to assist in keeping our campus safe and walkable for our students,” said Timothy Johnson, Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life (HRL). “They truly made a difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.”
FDOC Gets a Delayed Start
By Sunday, nearly 4,000 of UNCG’s 5,300 residential students had moved back into their rooms. Although in-person classes were suspended until noon on Monday, the Spring semester got its official start thanks to cooperation across campus departments.
“Facilities and HRL came together as a unified team to prepare for last weekend’s winter storm,” said Doug Fleming, HRL Associate Director. “Thanks to the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved, our students were able to navigate campus before, during and after the storm.”
With safety ensured, Spartans enjoyed the first snow that many of them have seen at UNCG. Here are a few glimpses of the snowy weekend on campus.
