UNC Greensboro College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Dean Dr. bruce mcclung today announced an interim director for the School of Music to fill the position left vacant after the unexpected death of Dr. Dennis W. AsKew last month.
Dr. Tami Draves, a tenured associate professor of music education in CVPA, will step into the role on Monday, Feb. 15, and serve a one-year term with the option for renewal. Dean mcclung says that Draves is a good choice to lead the School of Music through this transition.
“Tami has extensive leadership experience. Her current University service includes co-chairing the Faculty Senate’s COVID-19 Task Force, chairing its Academic Policies and Regulations Committee, chairing its Academic Integrity Committee, and serving as a member of the Faculty Senate’s Executive Committee,” said mcclung. “For the School of Music, she serves as coordinator of the Development Program for new faculty and coordinator for the PhD in Music Education. In 2018 she was chosen as one of 35 participants from an applicant pool of 85 to complete the BRIDGES Academic Leadership for Women program in the UNC System.”
Draves’ national professional leadership positions include serving as coordinator of areas for strategic planning and action for the Society for Music Teacher Education, chairing the Awards Committee of the Music Education Special Interest group of the American Education Research Association, serving as Western Division representative on the Executive Committee for the Society for Music Teacher Education, facilitating the Music Teacher Education Professional Development for the Beginning Teaching Area for Strategic Planning and Action, and co-directing the Desert Skies Symposium.
Draves came to UNC Greensboro in 2016 from the University of Arizona’s Fred Fox School of Music where she was a tenured professor and co-chaired the Commission on the Status of Women Faculty Affairs Workgroup, chaired the College of Fine Arts Committee on Arts Education, and served as area coordinator for Music Education. She holds a PhD from Michigan State University, an MM from the University of New Mexico, and a BME from Auburn University.
A national search for the next director of the School of Music will begin this fall.
