Recent UNC Greensboro graduate Akecicia “Keci” Steward ’19 has been recognized for outstanding leadership and service by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of colleges and universities that are committed to community engagement.
Steward is a recipient of the network’s Community Impact Student Award, which honors one student leader at each member school. The award recognizes students with a deep commitment to community involvement and ability to inspire peers.
Steward is one of 22 students across the state to receive the 2019 award, joining more than 300 college students honored by the organization since the award was first presented in 2006.
A native of High Point, North Carolina, Steward graduated from UNCG in December 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in media studies. During her time at UNCG, she worked with University staff to develop the Catalyst program, a Saturday service opportunity in which participants engage in meaningful community service and learn about social and environmental issues that impact the local community.
“Keci’s vision, talents, and contribution of a strong student voice and sense of ownership to the Catalyst program have been crucial to its success,” said Kristina Gage, associate director for civic engagement in UNCG’s Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement.
Steward also served as a volunteer and facilitator with the National Conference for Community and Justice and was a leader of the Advocacy for Access, Action, Adaption student group. During the summer of 2018, she served as an AmeriCorps VISTA summer associate at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater High Point. Upon graduation, she was hired by the Boys & Girls Clubs as a program coordinator.
