UNC Greensboro’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) hosted a new summer camp this June for children at Piney Lake. The camp was the first of its kind in North Carolina.
From June 20 to July 1, six graduate clinicians and one CSD faculty member conducted therapy activities with children aged 7 to eleven who have stutters.
The activities included paddleboarding, kayaking, swimming, obstacle courses, relay races, corn hole, volleyball, nature hikes, yoga, journaling, crafts, theater, and painting.
The students’ work at the camp was part of their capstone research projects. Their research-in-practice focused on the skilled interventions of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and stuttering modification. The campers learned the ACT concepts of mindfulness, acceptance, identifying core values, and “unhooking” from unhelpful thoughts about their communication.
CSD plans to continue this camp next year and looks forward to enrolling additional participants in the future.
