Bachelor's in English Secondary Education

UNC Greensboro’s English with High School Licensure program prepares students for the needs of teaching English in grades 9-12. The University’s Department of English and School of Education work together to ensure students graduate with both the theory to support their practice and real-world experiences to prepare them once they graduate. Graduates go on to teach not only in North Carolina, but also in states with which North Carolina has reciprocal licensure agreements.

B.a. in English, Secondary Education PROGRAM DISTINCTIONS

• The English with High School Licensure program is accredited by both the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI)  
• Our graduates have excellent placement records and often go on to work for school districts across the state, nationally, and internationally.
• Alumni frequently have been named teacher of the year at the school, district, and regional levels.
• Department of English professors regularly win university-wide teaching and mentorship awards for their commitment to student success.

THE English Teaching STUDENT EXPERIENCE

• Small, discussion‑driven classes: Most English courses enroll 20–36 students, creating an engaging environment where you can participate actively and connect with faculty.
• Vibrant literary and creative community: The department hosts an impressive range of critical and creative speakers, bringing nationally recognized voices to campus.
• Opportunities for campus involvement: Students can take on editorial roles with UNCG’s fine arts magazine Coraddi or contribute to the student newspaper The Carolinian.
• Creative writing pathways: The creative writing minor offers a preview of UNCG’s renowned MFA in Creative Writing, one of the oldest in the country.
• Tailored English Teaching Curriculum: Students complete a diverse set of courses that align with licensure requirements of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
• Practical Classroom Experiences: Students complete field placements in local high schools, gaining real‑world experience observing, assisting, and teaching in English classrooms.
• Interdisciplinary Preparation Across English and Education: Students complete coursework in both the Department of English and School of Education, gaining essential skills in pedagogy, classroom management, and instructional design.

UNC Greensboro English graduates excel in oral and written communication, critical thinking, problem solving, active listening, and analysis. These strengths make them highly competitive candidates in education and in a wide range of professional fields. Students who pursue graduate or professional degrees consistently perform at top levels on exams such as the GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, and GRE, reflecting the strong academic preparation built into the English major.

Graduates of approved teacher education curricula are eligible for initial licensure on the basis of UNCG’s recommendation to the State Department of Public Instruction.
