Master's in Kinesiology - Human Movement Science

Kinesiology Open House

The M.S. Program in Kinesiology with a concentration in Applied Neuromechanics is designed for students seeking advanced expertise in biomechanics and motor. The program emphasizes rigorous research, requiring all students to complete a thesis.

Student can pursue two specialized tracks: Applied Neuromechanics (research or thesis track) or Sports Medicine (clinical or non-thesis track). Both pathways integrate knowledge from Biomechanics, Motor Behavior, Sports Medicine, and Athletic Training. This collaborative approach prepares students–as practitioners, researchers, or educators–to reduce injury risk, restore function after an injury or illness, and enhance health and performance in physically active individuals of all ages.

For more than a century, the Department of Kinesiology has been a cornerstone department of the University. Established as the Department of Physiology and Physical Culture in the Woman’s College in 1892, it championed the then-progressive belief that physical active was essential for women’s health and wellness. As the department evolved with the university, our name changed, but our commitment to promoting physical health education and instruction remains at the heart of our mission.

master of science in kinesiology, Human Movement Science Program Distinctions

  • Our interdisciplinary approach, paired with hands-on research or clinical experience, equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive after graduation. Through dynamic, diverse programs, we ensure students are fully prepared for your career.
  • Graduates of the program are recognized as highly skilled practitioners, researchers, and educators who are not only competitive in the job market, but are also dedicated contributors to the fields of kinesiology and health care.
  • The Applied Neuromechanics Research Group operates three cutting-edge laboratories. While graduate students typically focus their work in one lab, they are encouraged to use access any resources that can support their specific research objectives. Each lab offers a specialized focus, including:
    • Motor Behavior Laboratory (MB Lab)
    • Balance and Training Lab (BAT Lab)
    • Applied Neuromechanics Research Lab (ANRL)
  • For more information on current research projects, visit our website.

The Human Movement Science Student Experience

  • Beyond coursework, the Department of Kinesiology emphasizes hands-on, experiential learning through research, practicums, and practical experiences on and off-campus. We regularly collaborate with community organizations to provide a real-world experience and foster relationship that will help students grow into well-rounded professionals. This aligns with our mission to serve and give back to the communities we engage with.

After Graduating with your master’s degree in Human Movement Science
