Master of Arts in Teaching Degree - Secondary Mathematics Education

The MAT in Secondary Mathematics Education is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field and want to earn teacher licensure in North Carolina.

This program combines:

Graduates are prepared to teach mathematics in grades 9–12 and pursue licensure in North Carolina.

The SECONDARY MATHEMATICS EDUCATION Student Experience

Coursework focuses on both mathematics content and teaching practice, including:

  • Secondary mathematics curriculum and instruction
  • Educational psychology and differentiated instruction
  • Assessment and evaluation methods
  • Teaching diverse learners in today’s classrooms
  • Students also complete a clinical teaching experience, applying theory in real classroom settings.

All M.A.T. concentrations include required coursework and clinical practice aligned with state licensure expectations.

After Graduating with Your MAT In SECONDARY MATHEMATICS EDUCATIONon

Graduates are prepared for roles such as:

  • High school mathematics teacher
  • Middle school mathematics teacher
  • Curriculum or instructional specialist (with experience)

ADDITIONAL Requirements For MAT In SECONDARY MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, a mathematics minor, or 24 hours of undergraduate mathematics 
  • GPA scores that meet Graduate School standards
