Faculty and staff play a big role in shaping the campus community, and New Student Transitions & First Year Experiences would love your help. Help make those first days of class go as smoothly as possible by volunteering as a Spartan SPEAR. It’s a fun and rewarding way to connect with new students and help them start strong at the G.
Spartan SPEARS are stationed around campus to give directions, answer questions, and offer a friendly face during the first days of class. You’ll be helping new students feel welcome and confident as they navigate campus.
There are two types of roles you can choose from:
- Backpack Zone: Wear a backpack with a Your First Year (YFY) Spartan SPEARS flag and walk around a designated area, actively engaging with students.
- Station: You’ll be at a fixed location, marked with a feather flag, offering assistance as students pass by.
Sign up for one or more one-hour shifts between 7:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. during two days.
All Spartan SPEARS receive training on how to “RAWK” your role, a lime green Spartan SPEARS t-shirt and lime green beanie, a name tag button, and a clipboard with a campus map and other helpful information.
Help welcome our newest Spartans and make their first days unforgettable! Questions? Email yfy@uncg.edu for more information.
