The P.B.C. in Information Organization is a 12-hour certificate that allows the student to focus on library cataloging, metadata librarianship, archival organization, or information organization in general as part of an MLIS degree at UNCG or independent of the degree. Students must complete LIS 640: Information Organization and Access at UNCG or an equivalent course in another accredited LIS program, or they must have at least two years of experience working a technical services/cataloging position in a library or creating finding aids in an archive.

Program Distinctions

The Post‑Baccalaureate Certificate in Information Organization is a 12‑credit program focused on the principles and practices of organizing information in libraries and archives. The certificate allows students to develop expertise in areas such as cataloging, metadata librarianship, archival organization, and technical services.

The certificate may be completed as part of the MLIS degree at UNCG or as a standalone credential. Students entering the program bring either relevant coursework or professional experience in cataloging, technical services, or archival organization.

Student Experience

Students engage in advanced coursework emphasizing the organization, description, and access of information resources. Coursework supports both theoretical foundations and applied practice in areas such as cataloging, classification, indexing, metadata, and archival records management.

Students may gain practical experience through a supervised practicum or an independent study, allowing them to apply course concepts in real‑world library or archival settings.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • At least two years of professional experience in technical services or cataloging in a library, or creating finding aids in an archival setting
