Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians will notice new pavement markings on Stirling and Kenilworth Streets the week of Aug. 3. This pilot, in partnership with the City of Greensboro and The Middle College at UNCG, tests new traffic lanes to improve safety and mobility around UNC Greensboro.
The pilot will maintain Stirling and Kenilworth’s existing one-way traffic pattern with the following changes:
- New pavement markings designating a single drive lane for through traffic
- A new formal one-way bicycle lane for each roadway
- Designated zones for loading and offloading vehicles and busses
Leadership from UNCG, The Middle College, and the City of Greensboro will monitor whether this smooths the traffic flow and creates safer campus operations.
The pilot will create narrower, more clearly marked lanes to encourage slower speeds and more predictable movement for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, golf carts, and low-speed vehicles. This aims to clear up confusion about Stirling and Kenilworth Streets, which frequently results in wrong-way driving and speeding.
Stakeholders from UNCG, The Middle College, and Greensboro all provided input on the pilot. The city will paint lines and install flexible posts and semi-permanent signage before the first day of class for The Middle College and UNCG.
No traffic closures are expected, aside from limited short-term periods needed for installing traffic control devices. Parking enforcement will continue at regular levels with an emphasis on education.
Later in the semester, UNCG and City of Greensboro partners will review feedback from campus and community, then decide whether any modifications are needed and if the configuration should be made permanent.
All students, employees, and visitors are asked to use caution in the area and follow posted signs and pavement markings. If exiting the Walker Deck onto Stirling Street, please look for cyclists in the bike lane before pulling out. UNCG thanks everyone for their patience and cooperation.
