We are pleased to share that North Carolina has finalized its 2026-27 state budget. The budget includes significant investments that strengthen the University of North Carolina System and provide important benefits for UNC Greensboro. These investments reflect the state’s continued commitment to public higher education and its vital role in preparing tomorrow’s workforce, advancing research, and serving communities across North Carolina.
For UNC Greensboro, the budget includes several positive outcomes:
Employee & Retiree Compensation/Benefits
Compensation for Our Employees: Eligible state and university personnel will receive a 3% across-the-board salary increase, effective July 1, 2026. Sworn law enforcement officers will receive a 13% across-the-board increase.
Employee Bonuses: Eligible employees who make more than $65,000 will receive a $1,000 one-time bonus, while those who make $65,000 or less will receive a $1,750 one-time bonus.
Retirees: State retirees will receive a one-time 2.5% Cost of Living Adjustment Supplement.
When and who will receive these increases?
Individuals who were employed in a permanent full time, permanent part time, or temporary hourly position, on or before June 30, 2026, are eligible for the 3% increase. Increases will be paid on the July 31, 2026, paycheck and calculated using the June 30, 2026, recurring base salary.

UNC System-Wide Provisions
Enrollment Funding: Allocates $153 million to fully fund the UNC System’s enrollment growth request for the current fiscal year.
Sports Wagering Adjustments: Increases the excise tax on sports wagering operators from 18% to 23%, adjusting UNC Greensboro’s estimated annual athletic department support to $3.0 million (from $2.4 million previously).
Student Support: Includes $15 million in recurring funding for need-based financial aid, as well as additional support for military-affiliated students, healthcare workforce programs, and other initiatives that help more students earn a high-quality, affordable education.
UNC Greensboro-Specific Appropriations
The BRIGHT Institute: $1 million non-recurring allocated to the Battery Research, Innovation, and Next-Gen Energy Harvesting Technologies (BRIGHT) Institute at UNC Greensboro to support equipment purchases and program capacity expansion.
Moore Building Renovation: $8.47 million for the continued funding of the Moore Building renovation. The total amount authorized for this project is $24.2 million.
Implementation details, including the timing of salary increases and bonuses, will be shared as guidance is received from the UNC System.
