Lactation pod inside the UNCG library space.

Support for new parents at UNCG just got a boost! University Libraries installed a new Mamava lactation pod in the EUC Connector to provide a private, comfortable space to pump or nurse. Now, in addition to NIB 147 and Bryan 344G, we’re proud to offer parents a clean and quiet space to pump or nurse. Lactation or breast/chestfeeding on campus is not restricted to these areas.

North Carolina state law protects those who breastfeed in any private or public location.

Jackson Library previously had a lactation room available in the tower, but due to the library renovation project, the space is now inaccessible. The Mamava, which is also wheelchair accessible, will provide important access to UNCG community members for the duration of the first phase of the library’s renovation project and will move to a permanent home in Jackson Library in 2026.

Amy Harris Houk, Professor and Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning at the University Libraries, says that “The University Libraries strives to be welcoming to all. One of the primary aims of our three-year renovation project is to increase accessibility and create a more inclusive environment. We are grateful to our partners in the Elliott University Center, especially William Parrish and Kathleen McGirty, for helping us provide this valuable option for the UNCG community while our lactation space is unavailable.”

Dr. Regina McCoy, Associate Vice Provost for Retention and Student Success, shared her thoughts on the new pod. “At UNCG, we know student success starts with taking care of the whole person, each and every student. The arrival of the Mamava – a dedicated space for our lactating and nursing students – reflects our commitment to health, wellness, and the goals of our QEP, Spartans Thrive. This journey began years ago when I was a faculty member in the School of Health and Human Sciences, working to establish our first nursing room. One space at a time, we’ve been building a campus that supports every student, and I’m so proud to see us continuing this important work.”

To use the Mamava, please visit the EUC Information Desk for access instructions or call 336.334.5510. More information about the pod, as well as a list of resources for employees and students, is available here.
